I don't know quite where to start with this except to at least open up the communication lines. So we are looking for a community which could benefit from renewable energy... I guess all communities could benefit when you really look at it.
I definitely think that more people need to be aware of what is going on and that we need to do something about it, so maybe a good project would be to increase awareness about this site within communities.
To many people, this site, and even the energy problems, do not exist. So we could let them know that these things do indeed exist and then maybe find out what they want and need in their communities as far as renewable energy. I know my community could, as a start, at least use a better recycling program and I'm sure there are other communities which need similar improvements.
Yea, that's what this type of site is for is to bring people together that we may organize in various ways that will hopefully help make a difference.
You're right in that most people don't seem to know, or are too busy with other aspects of life to give "green" much concern.
One of the things I have been doing is attempting to keep abreast of the breakthroughs in green energy production. There are new quiet and very efficient, small, home wind turbines coming on the market for example. Technological breakthroughs in solar cells is exploding.
What I have been doing with this information is emailing examples to local radio stations, and mentioning how such information brings hope and promise of hundreds of thousands of new jobs to a country starving for something positive. This type of do-something-yourself is what I feel is one of Obama's main messages. Like he said, it's about us, not him.
As more and more people visit here (because we all help get the word out like you mentioned) then many things will unfold. Many opportunities to help and participate.
I would like to see some progress toward improved use of energy and natural resources. To that end, may I offer a new way to build structures--
A few years back, I devised a way to build structures with less-valuable materials, well, just less materials. (An improvement on Bucky Fuller's geodesic domes, if you like.) You will find a lengthy discussion of the concept at http://www.ernsblog.com. It's just a better way to build domes or spheres. No lumber is used in my method. I would like to see someone work out the details of reducing the idea to a process for poor communities to build their own energy-efficient homes out of local materials. And, if you give me a job on the project that would be just fine. I am also excited about the idea of using my dome structure to build super-efficient greenhouses that can allow more people in the world to grow their own food. For example, a greenhouse that extends growing seasons in the far north, like Alaska.
I also have two energy efficiency projects I am working on, but maybe those could be examined at some future time.
A final word: I am a well-trained scientist and engineer, semi-retired. If someone has a technical problem, you might ask if I can solve it.
