A true success story and an ongoing challenge: Colonia Fausto Gonzalez needs our help

We’re standing in the middle of a garbage dump, and we’ve never been happier.

It’s hot and dusty here at the Tijuana Municipal Dump, yet it’s all smiles among the schoolkids that greet me at Colonia Fausto Gonzalez.

Amid what Mother Teresa called “the world’s most destitute” community, a group of humanitarians called Responsibility have created a school that is bright, clean, and fu… Continue

Education + Energy = a better future for Tijuana Youth

We had a great meeting on Friday with the founder of a San Diego-based organization called Responsibility (http://www.responsibilityonline.com/), They've built a school and improved the quality of life for some of Tijuana's youth in what Mother Teresa called "one of the world's most destitute" communities, located in and around Tijuana's municipal garbage dump. We'll be traveling to the community during their "back to school" week (first week of September) to plan out the details, but we're most… Continue

Moving forward on our Tijuana energy project

Dear members,

I just wanted to take a moment to update you on our progress. We're working on finalizing our choice of communities for our renewable energy project in Tijuana, Baja California. We had a great meeting this week with the publisher of La Prensa, a major Spanish-language newspaper in San Diego and Baja, who had some great suggestions. We expect the location to be finalized within the next several days. Next step will be bringing in our engineers to review the location and crea… Continue

Where we live, we have 2 mobile home parks with limited income residents. Once a specific (economical) alternative energy solution could be presented to the park owner/manager - to invite the collective residents to approve and sign on - that would be a specific solution.
For instance - there are wind turbines, but they cost so much for an individual - but a mobile home park fits the parameters of multiple residents drawing power from a local turbine. The problem is in the cost.
Who will front the initial cost? Not the residents, due to fixed incomes. Not the owner - because they may not have enough capital to set it up? (even with tax credits). What I see is the hurdle to over come is the up-front costs. PG&E - the electric company - would have the most vested interest in keeping their customers on their 'grids' - but even they would balk at the up-front costs.

Dear Nan,
Specifically we're looking for areas where renewable energy would present an opportunity to greatly reduce human suffering. For example, we're researching a project in Nicaragua where they have a severe shortage of clean water, resulting in disease as well as thirst. They have no conventional energy infrastructure with which to power a conventional water treatment plant. So we'll be bringing in solar powered water purifiers that will capture rainwater and treat it so it will be drinkable. We're currently raising funds to do this, with a goal of roughly $65,000 for the equipment, plus the costs of transportation. So any projects in a similar vein would be ideal for us. Then of course, as more funds become available, we'll want to expand into larger projects.

Can y'all provide a place to stay while working with you down there? I'm a HD videographer in case you need someone to document the unfolding of the plan and execution. I have a mobile Mac for editing and posting to several sites I have plus YouTube and whatever you have going.

Dear Bernard,
Thanks for clarifying. I'd definitely be interested in having you contribute your knowledge and skills to the project! BTW, are you the developer on the PickensPlan site? I see it referenced on your page. If so, good work!

Hi Harley, I'm talking about the article at the bottom left side of the home page. It's very light and difficult to read.
Otherwise, everything looks great!

Hi Harley,
I do so love Colorado. Thanks for your message. I teach high-school here in Denver, and I am excited to try incorporating this endeavor as a project for my students. I think it will be a powerful experience. Take great care. And, thanks for the note. I hope you are good.
