How do you think renewable energy can most benefit humanity? (Optional)
The more we think & care of others, the better the experience of living. Taking the effort of recycling, reusing, switching to renewable energy - is like Einstein's theory - energy is neither created nor destroyed, but transformed. When people come together in a cooperative spirit positive results can happen. But it takes the collective mind to move forward.
What is the biggest challenge for renewable energy today? (Optional)
People's attitudes.
How is your community affected by energy scarcity? (Optional)
Our community does not have a high income average. Affordable renewable energy is a must. It is the below average income citizen who is impacted most.

Dear Jake,

That's a very interesting issue. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. You might be a good candidate for a "small wind" installation. We have a company here in San Diego that does small turbines producing about enough energy for a single home, rather than the giant ones you've seen. Do you have strong winds in your area? If so, this might be a good solution.

Their website is http://helixwind.com. I believe their basic generators run more like $6000-$10,000 but with government rebates that becomes even lower.

Local and neighborhood power generation is truly the key. I would recommend calling a meeting with your neighbors who are in need of help, and finding out:
a) What is their collective energy usage and costs? (Just pull together their electric bills).
b) How many residences would be involved?
c) Would they have time to organize and talk to local politicians? That's one of the best things they can do, and we can provide them with detailed material, including video, powerpoint presentations, and websites that will help make the case. We could help you organize a group in your area. It takes "feet on the ground" in every area to push this message forward and create change.

Please let me know what you think of the above. Talk to you soon!

Mobile home parks have multiple residents, usually on fixed incomes, retirees, etc.
In appropriate locations - setting up wind turbines that the residents can collective draw from, is a start.
The problem is cost. Who will front the money?
Owner of the park?
Local utility (to protect it's domain)?
Government?
What would it cost in total to "do the job" - converting to wind turbines? And once that is known - what would that break down to costing each citizen?
Then, based on tax bracket as to the sliding scale of what each person contributes.
What wind turbine companies would "qualify" for citizens to choose from, if there were subsidizes for backyard turbines?
Example: http://www.skystreamenergy.com/
This turbine generates about 1.6 KW/yr - which is more than one house needs - but the cost is about $15k-20k to set up.
Permits have to be paid - Napa County is $1500, Solano County $800 --> why so expensive, when the citizen is investing in the country's future?
PG& E - in our area won't buy back excess power...
Why not? (because it takes from their profits...and shareholder's profits)...
Local utility has to change... be willing to buy excess energy.
Local government has to change - permit credits within a time-frame to counter the existing permit costs.
Wind turbine companies have to be capable & willing to increase mass production and in turn lower profit margins.
This website is a start....

Cool video, Jake! And I agree with you that lower-income citizens are the most affected by the energy crisis. Is there a community near you that has a really specific need, that we can add to our project list? Please let us know. We want to empower our members with the knowledge and connections they need to make a difference in their community. Please let us know how we can help.
